Biography

Adriana Muñoz Hernandez was born in Bogota, Colombia on August 1, 1956.  Her parents emigrated to the United States in 1962 from Bogota, Colombia. She lived and studied in Los Angeles, California. Her primary passion was always art but it was not encouraged in her family as way of living or a viable career. She was also fascinated with the human body and considered a career as a surgeon.  She attended California State University, Northridge (1974-1980) embarking on the double majors Biology and Visual Art.  In 1980 she went to live in Tapei, Taiwan for one year.

After returning from Taiwan she moved to Northern California. She began to show her photographs in art shows where she won several prizes.  From that work she expanded to editorial photography to make a living.

At the age of 30 she moved to Mexico which became a life changing experience.  The richness of the Mexican culture, it’s people, it’s art and mysticism impressed her so profoundly that she came back after 2 weeks to closed her studio and move to Mexico.

She lived in Mexico for eight years making photographs, teaching photography and design. Inspired by the hand made paper made in Mexico, she learned and then then taught the art of paper making as well as different artisanal Mexican media.
She believed that art was a window into all knowledge and that everyone had creative potential. Every child and adult should be encouraged to explore their creativity. So she started a Creativity School in the town where she lived. She also taught adults the art of paper making.
At the age of 38 she had a child of her own and again financial pressures made it difficult to continue living as a working artist.
She returned to the United States in 1996 where she then went back to school to become a credentialed bi-lingual teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. With the desire to teach art again she returned to school to work on a Masters of Art Education.   In 2006 she joined the LAUSD Arts Education Branch and taught visual art until 2016.

At the end of 2016 she was diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer. Nine months later another primary cancer appeared in her brain, glioblastoma multiform. She has surpassed her life expectancy by four years. Adriana lives in Los Angeles and is presently making new art .
